When pig manure is used to process organic fertilizer, water is an important parameter for organic fertilizer fermentation. When the water content of pig manure is too large, the fermentation time is long, and when the water content is too low, the temperature of pig manure can not reach the fermentation temperature. According to the situation after mixing, appropriate water or materials should be added to control the water content in 40% – 45%, that is, holding the pig manure with hands without water seepage. So how to adjust the water content in pig manure fermentation?

Microbial life activities need to constantly absorb water from the environment to maintain normal metabolism. Moreover, microorganisms can only absorb soluble nutrients, and the composting

materials softened by water absorption are easy to decompose. Therefore, appropriate moisture content is the necessary condition to maintain the optimal activity of microorganisms and the smooth progress of composting fermentation. When the water content is higher than 80%, the water molecules fill the interior of the particles and overflow to the particle gap, which reduces the pores of the reactor and increases the resistance of gas mass transfer, resulting in local anaerobic of the reactor, inhibiting the activity of aerobic microorganisms, and not conducive to the high temperature aerobic fermentation of materials.
However, the water content should not be lower than 40%. If the water content is too low, it will increase the porosity of the heap, increase the water dispersion loss, and cause water shortage in the heap, which is not conducive to the activity of microorganisms and affect the fermentation. A lot of research results show that the limit moisture content of compost is generally 60% – 80%, and the suitable moisture content is 50% – 60%.
Generally, the moisture content of composting materials (municipal solid waste and agricultural waste) can not reach the required moisture content value. In the process of composting, water, sludge, wet pig manure and other animal manure are generally used to adjust the moisture content. If the moisture content of composting material is too high, crushed crop straw, garbage, sawdust and edible fungus waste chaff can be added to adjust the moisture content.
